Chapter 64 - Baseball Tonight

Cate watched Jon dance across her television screen, his shaggy hair bouncing, the muscles of his neck straining as he belted out the vocals into the mic. The music pulsed through the speakers, surrounding her and carrying her away, as always.

She couldn’t tear her eyes away from him. He was mesmerizing. Richie and David and Tico and Hugh were wonderful to watch, but there was just something about Jon. That’s why he’s one of the best frontmen in the business, Cate thought with a little smile.

Watching Jon on DVD, curled on her couch, it seemed surreal to Cate that she had just spent almost twenty-four hours alone with him. It was like she had emerged from some amazing dream, stepping back into the reality of her day-to-day life, into the normalcy of her home.

Cate smiled again as her fingers went to her lips, tracing the memory of his kisses. He had held her and danced with her. He had drunk wine and talked and laughed with her. He had played guitar for her, sang to her, sang with her. Hell, he had paraded around half-naked in front of her. And he had wrapped his arms around her and kissed her, and touched her, and aroused her in a way she hadn’t felt… well, ever.

Cate sighed, her eyes following his image on her TV, praying it hadn’t all been a dream.

As if to answer her prayer, Cate heard her Blackberry ring, vibrating against the end table next to her soda can. Recognizing the ringtone, she smiled and pushed the pause button on her remote, freezing the frame on a particularly delicious picture of Jon’s black leather-clad behind stopped in mid-shimmy. “Hi there,” she said into her phone. “How was dinner?”

“Hey Baby. I missed you,” Jon answered. “Dinner was…interesting.”

Cate chuckled. “I warned you!”

Jon laughed. “Yeah, I wasn’t sure there for awhile that I was gonna get out in one piece. Dina’s a pretty interesting character. So are her friends. The term ‘pack of cougars’ comes to mind.”

“Oh, I’m sure you just charmed the pants off of Dina and her friends,” Cate teased.

Jon made a face at Cate’s choice of words. “Eew. Thanks for putting that image in my head.” He chuckled. “Nah, she was fine. Perfectly nice. Just a little…overzealous. And our little “supper at the house” was actually a catered dinner party for twenty-five.”

“Wow!” Cate laughed. “Didn’t see that coming, huh?”

“Nope.” Jon paused. “So, how about you come back over here and let me charm the pants off of you?” he asked, dropping his voice a seductive growl.

Cate felt her heartbeat accelerate. She looked at the clock on her DVD player, and saw that it was 9:45 p.m. “It’s kinda late. Aren’t you tired?” she asked. “I mean, Hell, we hardly got any sleep last night, or Friday night for that matter. And I have a staff meeting tomorrow morning at eight.”

“It’s not late,” Jon countered. “It’s not even ten. Rock Star, here, remember? I’m like a vampire. I stay up all night.” He chuckled. “And I’d love to suck on your neck.”

Cate laughed at his silly joke, then hesitated. “I don’t know, Jon….” I really need to get some sleep tonight…

“Oh, c’mon…. just come over for a drink. We can watch the rest of the baseball game.” Jon pleaded.

“Well… okay,” she heard herself agree. “But I don’t know about the drink. I think I need to let my liver dry out a little bit, as much as we drank the last two nights.”

“No problem. I have Diet Coke. Or beer. Or whiskey. Whatever you want.” Jon answered, his voice betraying his excitement that Cate had agreed to join him.

Cate laughed again at him. Damn, he IS irresistible. “Okay, I’ll be there in about half an hour.”

“I’ll be waiting,” Jon answered sexily. “Bye.”

Cate pushed the button on her Berry, then looked at Jon’s image on her television screen. Daaaamn, she thought appreciatively, for perhaps the ten millionth time. She grinned. And in just a half hour she could even grab that perfect ass, if she was so inclined. She shook her head in amazement, then turned off the TV and rose from the couch.

He was waiting for her when she arrived at the villa, standing outside the heavy oak front door. Cate smiled as she pulled her Mustang into the drive behind Jon’s rental SUV, then put it into park and turned off the engine.

Jon strolled over and pulled her car door open, then offered his hand. Cate giggled and placed her hand in his, leting him guide her out of the car. She swooned just a bit at his gentlemanly manners, and at the radiant smile he gave her as he pulled her up and into his arms. Before she could even shut her car door, Jon’s lips were on hers, his tongue was in her mouth, and his arms were around her waist.

Cate gasped when Jon finally broke the kiss. “Wow!” she breathed. “That was quite a hello.”

Jon chuckled. “Told ya I missed you.” He reached up a hand to push back a wisp of ginger hair from her face. “And somehow I don’t think I’ll get to greet you like that at the office tomorrow.”

“No, you surely won’t,” Cate agreed. In fact, their contact at the Center was going to have to remain completely professional, no matter how personal it had become over this glorious weekend.

She gave him a little smile, then stepped away and reached into the car to pull her key from the ignition. She pushed the door closed, then hit the “lock” button on her key fob. That done, Jon led her by the hand through the front door and into the villa.

When they entered the living room, Cate saw that Jon had lit the candles inside the fireplace. Over the mantle, the huge plasma TV displayed the Sunday night baseball game. Cate chuckled when she saw the matchup: Phillies at Dodgers. She grinned when she saw the score, 7-2 Phils in the bottom of the sixth inning.

“What can I get you to drink?” Jon asked, leading Cate over to the couch and releasing her hand, gesturing for her to sit. “Want a beer?”

“Well…” Cate hesitated, then looked at the TV. “Okay.” She always had a beer while watching the baseball game. She settled onto the couch and stretched her legs out, crossing her bare feet at the ankles and resting them on the ottoman. “But just one.”

“Coming right up.” Jon moved around the couch and into the kitchen. He paused and looked back over at Cate, then smiled. She was wearing her favorite patched jeans again, along with a snug black ribbed tank with a small Harley-Davidson logo on the chest. Her thick, shiny hair was pulled back into a loose ponytail.

He watched her grin at the TV as the Phillies turned a double play. She looked like a sexy tomboy. She IS a sexy tomboy, he thought.

Jon quickly pulled two beers from the fridge and uncapped them, then returned to the living room. He handed Cate a cold Sam Adams, then settled down beside her on the couch. He slipped his arm around her shoulders, propping his bare feet up on the ottoman beside hers.

Jon sighed happily as Cate settled against his chest, then smiled up at him. “Thanks,” she said softy. Then she turned her attention back to the game.

Jon chuckled. Cate certainly loves her baseball, he thought. He took a drink of his beer, feeling the icy beverage slide down his throat. He squeezed her shoulders gently and pressed a kiss against her temple, then settled in to watch the rest of game with her.

They sat together on the couch, enjoying the game and each other’s company, chatting between innings and cheering the Phillies’ play. When the final out was recorded, Cate reluctantly pushed herself up off Jon’s chest. She gave him a wistful smile. “I should go,” she said softly. “I need to get home and get some sleep.”

Jon gave her a pleading look. “Stay just a little longer. It’s not that late. Besides, you haven’t even told me what time I need to come in tomorrow, or what we’re doing.”

Cate hesitated for a second, then smiled, giving in to his request. “Just a little while longer. And as for tomorrow, we’re doing a couple things. You don’t need to be in until lunch time, but we’re gonna be working tomorrow night. After lunch you’re doing the Crash and Bang course…” she grinned. “…that’s offensive driving…then you’re gonna observe the OC Spray training. After dinner we’re back on the range for more firearms.”

“Cool!” Jon exclaimed. He had seen the cars screaming around the track near the firearms ranges, squealing tires and ramming into each other. It had looked like a controlled demolition derby. “I’m gonna get to drive?”

Cate laughed at his enthusiasm. “Yeah, you’re gonna get to drive.”

Jon leaned over and gave her a sweet kiss. “So, if I don’t have to be in until lunchtime, why do you have to be in early?” he asked softly, his lips hovering near hers.

Cate smiled and pulled her face back a bit to look at him. Her heart did a little flip as she saw the hopeful look in his gorgeous blue eyes. “Because, we always have a staff meeting first thing Monday morning. We have to go over the week’s schedule.”

“Yeah, but you’re on a special detail,” Jon argued, his voice taking on a more seductive tone. “I’m sure Floyd doesn’t expect you to be in early. Especially since we’re working the range tomorrow night.”

You’re probably right… Cate paused. “I know, but I’m part of the team. I still gotta pull my weight.” That sounded like a weak-ass excuse, she thought. She knew where Jon was going with his argument…he wanted her to stay the night. She felt her heart beat faster at the thought. And again she felt the nervous flutter in her stomach.

Jon gave Cate a long look, then smiled slyly. “Well, you can at least stay for one more drink…” He left the statement open-ended, waiting for her decision.
