Chapter 69 - Escape

Cate was sitting in the corner of the room, watching him. He was magnificent, his torso bare, the black denim jeans skimming his form, undone at the waist. He stood by the bed, his chest heaving in anticipation, looking toward the bathroom doors.

He sucked in a sharp breath as she moved into the doorway, posing seductively for a long moment, then sashaying across the bedroom.

She was beautiful, glamorous, sexy. Her long blonde hair shimmered in the candlelight, and the black lace teddy hardly covered anything. Her legs looked a mile long in the black thigh-high stockings.

She stopped in front of Jon, and he devoured her with his eyes. Reaching out to her, Jon captured her waist and pulled her roughly to him, turning his back to Cate as he kissed her passionately.

The blonde’s eyes widened when she saw Cate in the corner of the room. “Who’s that?” she asked with a sneer, pointing an acrylic-tipped claw.

Jon turned and gave Cate a cold glance. “Nobody.” he replied. “Just ignore her. She’ll go away.” He again pulled the blonde roughly against him and gave her a long, hard kiss. Then he swept her up into his arms and carried her to the bed, laying her down then sliding on top of her with a moan.

Cate felt the tears of shame stinging her eyes. Her heart was breaking. She looked down to her lap and saw her Glock in her hand, and a dark, wet stain on her shirt…

Cate let out a loud gasp and bolted upright, her heart pounding. She looked wildly around the darkened room, panicking. She was in the bedroom. But she wasn’t in the corner. Cate clutched at her chest and realized she was naked. There was no bloodstained shirt, no gun.

She shuddered and pulled the sheet up to cover her bare breasts. The cold, clammy sweat that slicked her body made the sheet stick to her skin. Her heart racing, she gasped for breath.

She looked over and saw Jon sleeping beside her, lying on his back with one arm across his stomach, the other thrown up over his head on the pillow. He was breathing deeply and rhythmically. Cate focused on his breathing and forced her racing pulse to slow. It was just a dream… it was just a dream… she repeated silently to herself.

As she tried to calm herself, she felt a dark cloud of dread settle over her. She looked back at Jon’s peaceful form. Images of their lovemaking flashed through her mind, and she recalled what she had thought when it was over. I’ve finally found it… found him…. Cate felt her heartbeat race again. Oh no. Oh God. What have I done?

Suddenly she felt nauseous. Cate quickly slipped out of bed, her hand over her mouth, and hurried to the bathroom. She went to the toilet and opened the lid, then took a deep breath. The sick feeling subsided. She stood there for a few minutes, until she was sure she wasn’t going to throw up.

Cate left the water closet and moved to the vanity, turning on the tap and splashing cool water onto her face. She ran her hands through her hair and looked at her reflection in the mirror. She took a deep breath. Now you’ve really done it, she thought. Now it’s too late.

Cate stared at herself in the mirror for another long minute, then looked up at the clock. 4:25 a.m. Cate took another deep breath, then slipped out of the bathroom.

She quickly but quietly moved around the bed, to where she and Jon had shed their clothing the night before. Not wanting to wake him, Cate scrabbled around blindly on the floor in the dark until she found her bra, tank top, and jeans. It was useless trying to find her black panties in the darkened room, so Cate slipped on her jeans without them. As she was pulling on her bra, she heard Jon stir.

“Baby?” he mumbled hoarsely, reaching across the bed, feeling for her. When he couldn’t find her, he turned his head to look to where he thought she should be. “Cate?”

“I’m here,” Cate answered softly, slipping the straps of her bra up over her shoulders.

Jon pushed himself up onto his elbows. “What are you doing? Come back to bed,” he said groggily. “It’s still dark.”

Cate pulled her tank top over her head. “I have to go,” she said quietly. “I have a meeting in a couple hours.”

“What?” Jon stared at her for a moment, confused. Then her words sunk in. “What time is it?” he asked, turning to squint at the clock radio on the nightstand.

“Four-thirty,” Cate answered. She moved back around the bed to sit on its edge, beside Jon. “I need to go home, to get ready for work,” she said evenly, though inside her heart was pounding with barely-contained panic. “I’ll see you at the office later.”

Jon sat up and reached out to her, touching her cheek. “Stay with me, at least until the sun comes up,” he implored softly.

“I… can’t,” Cate answered in a strangled voice. If I don’t get out of here soon I’m gonna freak out. I can’t let him see me like this. She leaned forward and kissed him gently. “I have to go,” she repeated firmly. “I’ll see you at lunch.”

Jon tilted his head as he looked at her. In the dim moonlight coming through the French doors, he could see only part of her face. The rest was in shadow. But he could see the tears glittering in her eyes. “What is it, Baby?” he asked softly.

Cate shook her head, rapidly blinking her eyes to try to conceal her emotion. "Nothing. I’m fine. I… I’ll miss you.” It wasn’t a lie, but it wasn’t the truth about why she was crying, either. She leaned forward and gave him another quick kiss. “Go back to sleep. I’ll see you in a few hours.”

With that, she rose from the bed and turned away from Jon. She swiftly exited the bedroom and crossed the living room. The lamp that Jon had turned on when they came in from the deck was still illuminated, so Cate was able to immediately locate her keys and flip-flops, still lying on the floor where they had fallen when Jon had made her swoon with his kisses.

Cate quickly slipped her feet into the sandals and snatched up the keys, then unlocked the door and pulled it open. She had to get out of here before Jon came out to stop her. She would fall to pieces if she had to face him right now.

Cate bolted out the door, pulling it firmly shut behind her as she hit the button on her key fob to unlock her car door. She quickly slipped into the Mustang and started it up, revving the engine. As she turned to look behind her to back out of the driveway, she saw the front door to the villa swing open.

She hit the gas and backed the car out of the short driveway onto the access road. Unable to stop herself, Cate looked back at the villa’s entry and saw Jon standing there, clad only in his black jeans, staring helplessly after her. Cate’s heart throbbed painfully at the look on his face.

Her tears began to fall as she drove away into the darkness.

  1. ok, Grown ups talk thier problems over. WTF is wrong with this woman, she's acting like a mentally unstable individual.I kind of understood the misgivings at first but now she's caring them to the extreme. Unless that ex of hers tortured, beat and raped her for decades their is no reason for her to be acting this way. Poor Jon, isn't it Richie who is attracted to the wackos???

  2. Oh Cate, what is going on in that head of yours? That is some damage your Ex has done.... But this is Jon, not your Ex, give him a chance! What ever happened to out with the old, in with the new?

  3. Actually I can see it happening. You're a fan a really big fan and shock of all shocks this happens to you...I don't see anything wrong with it. Granted if you had read it from chatper 1 you could understand that Cate has issues. She is a woman in a mans world, she is tough and a teacher but not only that she is a fan and this drops in her lap. Do you be professional or gush like a fan? Do you stand on your what you have been taught that teahers do not have relationship with their students or do you throw caution to the wind and got for it. Then if you do...every thing you have done for years is out the window. thats a lot to handle and top it off this is the Jon oh my god Bon Jovi! From chapter one Cate is a by the book person...she threw the book away and gave into temptation. This is eactly what i meant by the morning after...I personally think you did a great job Catte.

    Keep up the great work!

  4. That ex of her's must have done a real number on her. Talk to Jon, he's not your ex. You'll never be able to move on and heal if you don't talk about it.

  5. Ok, some serious self confidence issues here! Is it because of her ex...or is it something more?

Either way Jon's got his work cut out for him.

  6. That stupid bastard of ex leaving her after she was nearly killed left deeper wounds than I expected.

    Jon, follow her!

  7. ok you want to know what I think, you are writing a very unsympathetic character in Cate. The fact that she has caused Jon so much emotional pain i.e. "cate's heart throbbed painfully at the look on his face. But she still drives away seeing him in pain. What has he done to deserve that? The way I see it she only cares how SHE feels at any given moment.Ok we are talking Jon Bon Jovi here, healthy ego notwithstanding he is still a human being with feelings! He has done everything in his power to safeguard Cates feelings more than most men would ever do, not ONCE acting like the "Rock Star", her friends like him, her bff likes him. I am all about taking responsibility for ones own actions without waa waaa waaing look at what he/she/they/it/ did to me! How the Center employs someone who is so emotionally fragile in such a stressful, high powered postion beats me. Perhaps to make your story more credible(sorry but a good writer should be able to accept constructive criticism) and you are a very good writer, She acts tough when she's training but the way she is being written she is about to (and probably was before Jon entered the picture) have a mental breakdown. That's all I'm saying....carry on......

  8. I am fascinated to see what comes next. As someone who has been thru a divorce, Jon's got to be holding some heavy emotional baggage himself. Will he snap at this uncalled for quick departure? Will one or both of her friends finally stop being nice about her behavior and have an intervention? Their next meeting is going to be pretty tense. He is, after all, human. Hmm, sort of like real life. They don't have sex and life is now a bed of roses! I think Cate knew herself and knew it was too soon but let herself be "convinced" instead of truly being ready. No, she's not a child but no one knows us better than we know ourselves. My two cents, looking forward to the next chapter!

  9. TALK, for God's sake TALK TO HIM! Arghhh she frustrates me soooo bad but I saw this coming. Still loving it but not looking forward to the inevitable 'it won't work' and one of them going off in a huff. They are perfect together and the sooner she realises it, the better for my blood pressure!

  10. well said totallysambora, I couldn't agree more

  11. I really like that Catte made her main character a strong woman, but not perfect. Cate has flaws, just like in real life. She's a lot like Jon, but has lots of insecurity that she tries to hide because she's made bad choices about men in the past. I see it as that "smart woman, stupid choices" situation that sometimes happens. I don't think she's crazy or having a mental breakdown just because she didn't jump into bed with Jon the first chance she had or because she's freaking out now. It makes her interesting and real.

This is a great story; its nice to read a fan fiction that is more than just a fairy tale fantasy with Happily Ever After. I loved the part where Jon got pissed and went drinking at the bar while Cate got upset with herself. It seemed very realistic. I also like that Cate doesnt want to cry in front of Jon, she's keeping that last barrier up to protect herself from getting heartbroken. I hope she lets it down, and it will be fun to see how and if Catte makes that happen.

I just found this story about a week ago and love that it reads like a movie. Catte keeps you guessing and her characters seem so human. And I am in LOVE with Danny!!!!!

Catte, keep up the great work. Dont turn Jon and Cate into the perfect love story. Love them just like they are, warts and all. You know where your going with this and what will happen, we don't, but I know the ride will be worth it in the end!

Just write faster, please! Keep up the great work!

  12. Wow! Y'all have some opinions about this chapter! :) I'm humbled that you care enough about this story/my characters to have so strong a reaction, positive or negative. When I embarked on this little experiment I never thought anybody but my GalPals would care in the least about my crazy little made-up world. Thanks for sticking with it...

Lemme say, I never intended Cate to be perfect. Lord knows she's not. And neither is Jon. So, they gotta go on this journey separately and together to see if it's ever gonna work. Patience, My Pets... all will be revealed in time. And things are not always as they seem...

    (Crap, I sounded really Hath-Like there, didn't I? Sometimes I scare myself!)

A wise (or at least really gorgeous, talented, and entertaining) man once said: "It's okay to be a little broken, everybody's broken, sometimes...."

Thanks again for reading & for the feedback. Hope you enjoy where this eventually goes...

  13. I understand Cate as she's like me or like I used to be before I found the one man who understands me perfectly and it took four years before I opened myself up to him enough to even cry in front of him. To show vulnerability when you've been broken is one of the hardest things to do so, please, give Catte S a little respect and credit for tackling such an emotional issue. Well done Catte.

  14. Wow!! I like the dimensions that you have to Catte's character. I understand that fear she has. Often times, strong people have a weakness and even though she is so tough, her heart is the one thing that she feels she needs to guard the most. Wow, thank heavens there's another chapter already hear for me to read. Looking at the dates, I found this late, but at least I found it...
